Life sciences are a broad field that includes amongst others biomedicine, pharmacy, molecular biology, chemistry, food research and nutritional sciences. Veterinary medicine can also be attributed to life sciences. The production of pharmaceutical agents (medicinal products) with the help of biotechnology, the creation of plants and animals using genetic engineering (genetics, cloning) and gene therapy for humans also count amongst the life sciences.

Clinical Research
Clinical research is concerned with the experimental assaying of therapeutic procedures, drugs and vaccines. The focus here is on the effectivity and safety of new treatments whereby the most important instrument is clinical studies. Only when the effectivity and safety of new treatments are verified, can they be approved by German “Bundesinstitut für Arzneimittel und Medizinprodukte” (BfArM – Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices).
